Tatum Phares

Tatum is Executive Officer to the CEO and works with Helen, War Child UK's CEO.

What does a typical day at War Child look like for you?

My days at War Child are always varied, and never boring! Mostly, I offer support to our lovely CEO, Helen, which is typically centred around ensuring our governance activities and regulatory reporting duties are high quality. It's also day-to-day items like diary management, strengthening our Leadership Group processes and supporting with compliance and vetting. I tend to act as our CEO's point of liaison with our Trustees, members of staff and stakeholders.

What do you enjoy about your role and/or working for War Child?

My favourite thing about both my role, and working for War Child more generally, is that my voice genuinely feels heard. I'm always encouraged to speak to Leadership Group transparently about my ideas, and once I do, I feel that change actually incurs as a result. I see the difference I'm making in my everyday work, and I find it really meaningful knowing it's valued by my colleagues at all stages of their careers.

How would you describe the working culture at War Child?

Everyone balances their War Child lives with their outside lives in a manner that inspires me to follow my colleagues' lead. In order to keep this healthy balance, we all share an empathetic and understanding mentality towards each other, knowing that we work our best when we're flexible. It's really comforting to know this support exists in a workplace!

What is your most memorable moment from working at War Child?

This past January the Lumineers (my favourite band to exist!) did a WC gig at a 300-something venue in Hoxton. I literally will never forget screaming all the words to their songs with close colleagues, who I also call incredible friends of mine as well. Not to mention the fact we raised an incredible £25,000 for children in conflict zones that night!

What would you say to someone thinking of applying for a role at War Child?

I cannot express enough how gratifying it is to work at WC. You're surrounded by people who not only want the best for children who so desperately need our help, but they also want the best for you too. The hearts here are on fire for serving each other, and to witness that in today's world is not always the case. But, I wholeheartedly believe it is at War Child. I believe WC can take you places in a personal and professional level; and, at the same time, it brings you back to what matters most, and that's looking outwards.
