Friendly Records Raise a Quarter of a Million Pounds for War Child

In 2022, as the war in Ukraine broke out, Tom Friend from Friendly Records in Bristol reached out with a simple question: “What can we do to help?”

That question sparked a remarkable partnership between Tom and Scott of Friendly Records and War Child – one that has since raised £250,000 to support children affected by conflict.

The journey began with an unforgettable night at the O2 Academy Bristol. An all-star lineup including Willie J Healey, Katy J Pearson, Billy Nomates, Heavy Lungs, Wilderman, IDLES and a historic performance from Portishead – their first in seven years – made it a landmark moment for Bristol’s music scene and for War Child.

Since then, the partnership has only grown stronger. Over the past year, the recorded music arm of Friendly Records curated a stunning run of limited edition, coloured 7” vinyl releases featuring artists such as IDLES, PJ Harvey, Beak, J Dilla & The Jimi Entley, and a one-off collaboration between Sleaford Mods and Hot Chip. Portishead’s haunting cover of ABBA’s “SOS” was a standout, with artwork from celebrated artists like Pete Fowler and David Shrigley adding an extra dimension to every release.

Each record was not only an incredible release – it also raised vital funds to help children whose lives have been torn apart by war.

The momentum didn’t stop there. Last summer, Friendly Records returned to the O2 Academy Bristol for another benefit gig – this time headlined by IDLES, with support from 86TVs, Zalizo, Boca 45, and hosted by none other than Stewart Lee.

It was a fantastic night, with the whole Bristol music community coming together to make the show happen and to raise as much money as it could for War Child. That’s one of the things that impresses me most about the events Tom and Scott put on, they involve so many wonderful people from the incredible music community in Bristol all pulling the same way for War Child.

Just when they said, “No more gigs!”, they did the opposite - and put on a day festival instead! Taking over Lost & Grounded Brewery on May 10th for a sun-soaked celebration of music, food and community spirit, the festival featured Sleaford Mods, Katy J Pearson, Zalizo, The 45s, and a genre-hopping DJ set from Claude Cooper. It was joyful, generous, and quintessentially Bristol.

We’re incredibly proud of the work we’ve done with our friends at War Child over the last year and have really enjoyed the opportunity to put together some brilliant shows and vinyl releases

At War Child, we are deeply grateful to Tom, Scott, and the whole music community they bring in. They work tirelessly (but always with joy in their hearts) to make a difference for those in need and help War Child rebuild communities that have been devasted by war.

There has never been a more dangerous time to be a child affected by conflict. But when we work together – as Friendly Records and the Bristol music scene so powerfully have – we show that change is possible and gives us hope for the future.

We can’t wait to see what comes next.
