Teaching Materials

We have range of Citizenship classroom resources aimed at students in years 9 to 11 available to download. This cohesive scheme of work includes seven interlinking lessons that are both easy to use and engaging for students.

Each lesson is designed around a four-part lesson structure and includes clear objectives and learning outcomes. It has been designed around the citizenship curriculum and gives students the opportunity to learn about a wide range of issues including child rights, conflict, global interdependence and active participation. Each lesson is fully resourced and contains activities that allow flexibility in approach and delivery.

If you would like a free hard copy of our citizenship pack then contact War Child on 020 7916 9276 or email us at schools@warchild.org.uk. The pack contains a CD-Rom and motivating posters that grab your attention and can act as a stimulating learning aid within the classroom, highlighting issues surrounding conflict related poverty. All we ask in return is feedback on what you and your students think of the resources, using the online form.

If require any further assistance then please don’t hesitate to contact the Schools Programme Manager on 020 7916 9276.

Available Lessons

Lesson 1
Students will consider global interdependence and look closely at The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. They will then relate this gained knowledge to real life situations.

Lesson 2
The central concept of the lesson is the impact of conflict. Students will begin thinking about conflict in general and then investigate three countries where conflict has been an issue. Research and group work skills are central to the tasks.

Lesson 3

The focus of the lesson is child soldiers. Students will hear case studies and then use their skills of empathy to try and put themselves in the same type of situation. This will draw upon the students creative skills.

Lesson 4
Students will be given the opportunity to research the plight of street children and engage in a mock debate. They will adopt the roles of a Parliamentary Committee and a lobbying charity during the task. Students will need to research political issues, respond to media influence and use their skills of persuasion during the debate.

Lesson 5
The participation options open to the general public will be analysed and discussed during this lesson. Students will then use all they have learnt so far to campaign for the rights of the child.

Lesson 6
Students will have the opportunity to become charities and will produce a proposal for their programmes and campaigns team. This task will require team work and negotiation and they must be able to rationalize all their decisions.

Lesson 7 – Extension Lesson
Students will be given the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout the scheme to the planning of a real awareness raising or fundraising event.
