Children in Prison

Years of conflict in Afghanistan have left the country in a state of extreme poverty. As a result many children are forced on to the streets where they must work in illegal, dangerous conditions to provide for themselves and their families. Theft, drug smuggling and sex work all expose children to physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

Legal Training

Children are forced into criminal activity by the extreme poverty in Afghanistan. Undertaking hazardous work including theft, drug selling and sex work leaves them open to physical, emotional and sexual abuse but the Afghan authorities are unable to cope with these challenges. There is little understanding of juvenile justice and child rights, leading to the regular arrest and detention of children.

Children in prison with their mothers

War Child has set up a kindergarten service for these children that ensures they have access to adequate healthcare, food, clothing and recreation. When they first started attending the kindergarten the children were quiet, shy and withdrawn. Now they are excited, noisy and confident.
