Heroes Walk in Famous Footsteps

It’s not often you get a chance to go to somewhere like Abbey Road Studios.

There was a real buzz in War Child the day we mastered the Heroes album. The staff at the studios were giving their time for free. Geoff did a fabulous job in getting the sound just right, and Ben was pleased with the order of the tracks.

The album plays well.

Bands had gone into studios in Berlin, Manchester, New York, Los Angeles and London. Giving their time and creative talents for free. And the living legends who had nominated them to record were all pushing behind the scenes. Encouraging, helping, promoting.

It was cold and dark by the time we spilled out of the studios with the freshly burned CD.

I walked out onto that zebra crossing and made a call home: “hey, I’m ringing you from an album cover!”.

Angry cars pipped.

But we didn’t care. Eighteen months of hard work was in our hands and, hopefully, an album that would generate the money and interest in our work to make a real difference in the lives of children who live with the brutal affects of war.

The true heroes.
