On Monday Downing Street hosted an online web chat on Afghanistan. This was the first online discussion that the Prime Minister himself has taken part in. We asked a question about whether there could ever be a military answer to stopping the 1 in 4 Afghan children dying before their fifth birthday.

Mr Brown's answer was this:

"Already the child mortality rate has been cut. The estimate is that now 100,000 children under 5 who would have otherwise died are now kept alive by better healthcare. This is because of British and other international countries paying for programmes to immunise children, to pay nurses, midwives and doctors and to make healthcare sustainable."

His answer was picked up by The Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/dec/14/100000-children-saved-afghan-war.

We've asked Downing Street for a clarification on where they got this figure of 100,000 from as it's not one that we've come across before. We'll keep you posted if we get a response...
