Ugandan volunteer: report

After years of enduring the sound of gun shots, witnessing killings and abductions, I am beginning to feel that the world is forgetting about the two decade conflict in Northern Uganda.

Yes we are enjoying some level of peace and calm now, but the consequences of the war are still vivid in the eyes of many children and young people like me. I attended a child protection meeting held in Omot sub-county on 17/Nov/2008, every member reported numerous cases of rape, defilement, child neglect and child labour.

Volunteers wanted for Uganda programme

We are training 120 child mothers and formerly abducted young people in computing, auto-mechanics, welding and fabrication and catering so that they’ll be able to find work and help their communities. Another 120 have just been enrolled into mainstream secondary schools and will be preparing to sit to their O'Levels in 8 months to become teachers, nurses and craft technicians. But we need volunteers to make this happen.

Outrunning the Accelerated Learning Program

Since we started the accelerated learning programme being implemented by one of our partners (CCF Pader) as part of the Comic Relief funded project, I heard lots of great anecdotes about the challenges the tutors are facing but the most unusual of all the challenges has been the fact that they are struggling to cope with the vigour, enthusiasm, and dedication of the girls in particular.
